The Truth

22 bottles

The answer is "22 bottles."

15 empty bottles → 5 bottles (up to the 20th). 5 empty bottles → 1 bottle (the 21st), with 2 left over. 1 empty bottle + 2 left over = 3 → 1 bottle (the 22nd). In the end 1 empty bottle remains, and no more can be exchanged.

Key Points

  • Carry the remainder over to the next round
  • Write out the exchanges in order
  • Do not forget the final fraction

Why people get fooled

Because it is easy to finish the calculation at 15 ÷ 3 = 5 bottles.
