The Truth

It actually gets warmer

The answer is "It actually gets warmer."

A refrigerator expels the heat from inside out of its back into the room. With the door open, it keeps removing the heat it has cooled, and the electricity used by the motor also turns into heat. For the room as a whole, the heat only increases.

Because electricity is used, the heat increases. It will not be "unchanged."

Where the heat goesFridgeHeat out of the back into the roomThe motor's electricity becomes heat tooThe cold does not leave the room. The room as a whole only gainsheat, so it actually gets warmer.

Key Points

  • A refrigerator is a machine that moves heat
  • Think about the heat of the whole room
  • Electricity turns into heat too

Why people get fooled

Because cold air comes out and you think it will cool the room.
